WEST PALM BEACH — Kimberly Mitchell’s expression turned to sheer horror. The West Palm Beach City Commissioner just had been alerted to a conflict that only the cruelest of fates could inflict.
Mitchell had spent last weekend in Charlotte, where her beloved — and undefeated — Florida State Seminoles football team won the Atlantic Coast Conference and earned a berth in the national championship game in Arizona on Jan 6.
Mitchell, who bleeds garnet and gold, already had been checking air fares and hotels.
Until a reporter asked her after Monday’s commission meeting if she realized Jan. 6 also is the night of the first commission meeting of 2014.
Her eyes bulged. She was speechless. But just for a few seconds. Then her mind was working.
“Let’s see. The meeting starts at 5 (p.m.), she said. “That’s 2 in California. I could do it (participate in the meeting) by phone.”
Then she said it might be moot. Tickets for the big showdown with Auburn University, which won its last regular-season two games in near-miracle fashion, already are well into four figures. Plus air fares and lodging.
Even if Mitchell does stay in town, getting home from City Hall, and in front of her TV, for an 8:30 p.m. kickoff might not be a given. Three meetings about the condo project went a combined 14 hours.
For Mitchell, there’s always the video recorder.
