The Dolphins finally addressed the defensive side of the football in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, selecting Alabama A&M defensive tackle Frank Kearse with the 231st overall pick. Four picks later, the Dolphins finished their draft by taking Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson.

Kearse, who stands 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds, started all 11 games for the Bulldogs and made 57 tackles in 2010, 14 tackles for loss, earning second-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors.

Wilson, 24, has one of the most interesting back stories in the draft. In 2007, he was charged with the murder of his aunt’s abusive boyfriend, Kevin Smoot, who was fatally wounded by a rifle shot after the two scuffled.

The incident occurred in California, and Wilson drove back to Montana that night. He returned to California the next day to explain what happened to authorities, but was charged with first-degree murder, and bail was set at $2 million, which his family could not raise.

He claimed he had acted in self-defense and pleaded not-guilty, but it took more than a year for his case to come to trial in Los Angeles County. The first trial ended in a mistrial, and it took him six months to come to trial again. Wilson was acquitted of all charges in his second trial, but only after spending two years in jail.

Wilson, a three-year starter at Montana from 2004-06, returned to the Grizzlies for his senior season in 2010. He played in eight games, recording 50 tackles, two forced fumbles and two sacks. He had eight career interceptions before his arrest, and said it took him about three games to feel like he had returned to normal after three years away from football.

But Wilson got in trouble again in 2010, charged with a misdemeanor in August for biting a woman’s leg. He pleaded guilty in December to misdemeanor disorderly conduct, and was ordered to write a letter of apology to the victim and received a six months probationary sentence.

Wilson visited with the Dolphins during the pre-draft process and said he was ecstatic Saturday to finally get his shot at the NFL.

“I prayed for this day every single night,” said Wilson, who stands 5-11, 193. “They did their research on me. They got to know me and know exactly everything.”

“I feel like I’m one of the top players in college football, but being drafted, period, is such a blessing that I can’t take it for granted.”
