When it comes to jeering opposing teams, Phillies fans can be brutal. But they just might go easy on Marlins left-fielder Logan Morrison this weekend at Citizens Bank Park.
Thanks to his Twitter account, Morrison (@LoMoMarlins) has ingratiated himself among a band of fervent Phillies fans.
As Matt (aka @AdamEaton21) explained, Phillies fans “yearn to connect” with their players. “Unfortunately we have no one on our team on twitter who’s being ‘real,”’ he said.
Along came Morrison, who launched his twitter account not long after the Marlins called him up in July.
Although Phillies fans might know each other personally, they’re a tight group in the blogosphere with a knack for sending inside jokes that often go viral, says Matt, whose twitter name pays homage to a former Phillies pitcher.
“LoMo caught on quick, really quick,” says Matt, who didn’t want his last name published.
The clincher came when an influential blogger – ZooWithRoy.com – sent Morrison a T shirt. “LoMo tweeted a picture of himself with the shirt on. A love affair ensued,” Matt said.
“LoMo is a guy who is not afraid to answer questions and really lets us take a peek in an MLB player’s world. He’s extremely interactive and doesn’t show any form of favoritism.”
Morrison, who said it’s important to interact with fans, enjoys staying in touch almost every day with the Philly’s Faithful.
“It’s fun talking smack to them and letting them talk smack to me,” he said.
“Philly is that blue-collar city and they can relate to me and the way that I play.”
Morrison will meet Phillies fans in person on Saturday in Philadelphia. He’ll appear at Carl’s Cards and Collectibles from noon to 1 p.m. to help raise money for the American Lung Association.
Matt, whose Phillies web site is called idontgiveaschmidt.com, has one warning for Marlins fans:
“You better believe when LoMo is a free agent or on the trading block, we’ll be asking about him. He’s a great guy that, regardless of his twitter account, is easy to love.”
