It’s a beautiful Sunday morning. The Marlins have won three in row, gunning for their first-ever sweep of a four-game series against the Mets in South Florida.
Perfect time to have a little pre-game fun with the Marlins’ policy of no long hair or mustaches. Just before he was called up, C Brett Hayes sported a mustache as part of a morale-boosting stunt with the Class AAA New Orleans Zephyrs.
The leader of the stunt was Taylor Tankersley, as you can see in this funny video by Cox 4 New Orleans called the Saga of the Stache.
(It may take a while for the video to load but have patience — it’s worth the wait.)
The Zephyrs were scuffling big-time, so Tank decided to fire the team up by having everyone grow a mustache — including Hayes and outfielder Bryan Petersen.
“When camp broke, I was thinking about all the coolest guys on the planet, a list like Burt Reynolds, Dale Earnhardt, Ron Burgundy,” Tank told the TV station in a tongue-in-cheek interview that includes clips from the movie Anchorman.
“What do all those guys have in common? It’s the mustache. I figured the power was in the stache.
Being a team player, Hayes grew one, too. But he wasn’t very happy.
“It was awful,” Hayes said. “They were terrible. Tank looked good with the shaved head but I looked terrible.”
Hayes said it was about a week ago when he decided he couldn’t take it any more — he shaved off the mustache, to the glee of his girlfriend who also didn’t like it.
A few days later, he was called up.
“I took it off because, A, it looked bad and, B, she didn’t like it,” Hayes said. “Coincidentally I got called up. Nice timing.”
Hayes said he was creeped out by a common occurance during his mustache-wearing days, which ran roughly form mid-April to early May.
“I had more people with mustaches come up to me in public —I felt like I was part of a fraternity – asking me for directions. I was at the mall and somebody says where’s the so-and-so store. I look up and he’s got a mustache. It was the weirdest thing.”
