In the three years they’ve met in the preseason, Dwyer and Miami Central have produced must-see games. This year, their matchup will be must-see TV.
Dwyer Athletic Director Tom Pagley said his school’s kickoff classic will be televised on Fox Sports Florida. Details are still in the works, but the date (Thursday, Aug. 22) is confirmed.
Miami Central, coming off a Class 6A state title, brings back Miami-bound running back Joseph Yearby and Florida commit Dalvin Cook. They run behind an offensive line led by BCS recruit Trevor Darling and others. Rising junior wideout Da’Vante Phillips and other standouts make up what some believe could be one of the best teams in South Florida history. MaxPreps has the Rockets ranked No. 2 in the country to start the year.
It’s not often Dwyer is considered an underdog, but here we are. What Central brings on the ground, Dwyer’s hotly recruited receivers Johnnie Dixon, Clint Stephens and Ezra Saffold produce in the air, and the Panthers’ defense, featuring safety Shawn Boone and defensive end Mark Kelly, should once again be stout.
Like many, Pagley is excited for the matchup – and has no idea what to expect.
“We don’t play a lot of the same teams throughout the seasons,” he said. “I think they did pretty well in their spring game. We did pretty well against Vero. Last year was a pretty good game down there.”
