UPDATE: The Palm Beach Post was recently informed by former Royal Palm Beach High School football coaches Darren Studstill and Bill Ameral that the 2008 altercation referred to in this blog item did not, in fact, happen in front of the team.
At the end of Royal Palm Beach’s 2009 football season, it was clear that Frank Kunf would be done as head coach unless there were major changes to his staff.
When the Wildcats start spring practice in May, Kunf will remain in charge, but he will have some new assistants. Royal Palm Beach dismissed defensive coordinator Bill Ameral and offensive coordinator Keith Tillman.
“Frank evaluated the situation and things needed to change,” athletic director Steven Kaufmann said. “There was a lot of philosophical differences the last two years on the coaching staff. They’ve had two years to work out and nothing’s been resolved.
“The kids are the ones who have paid for it. It’s not fair for the kids.”
Assistant coach Matt Csoka also is leaving the team, but that was his choice and he left on good terms, Kaufmann said. Kaufmann also said Csoka has accepted a position at Palm Beach Gardens.
Dissention in the coaching staff preceded Kunf. In 2008, when Darren Studstill was head coach, principal Guarn Sims suspended Studstill and Ameral after the two had a heated, physical dispute in front of the team.
Sims fired Studstill days before the team began official practices last August. Sims declined to discuss specifics, but there were concerns over Studstill’s inability to reconcile his assistants. There also were questions about Studstill’s handling of team funds.
Studstill, who had been an assistant coach at Royal Palm Beach for eight seasons, went 11-2 and reached the regional finals in his only year as head coach, but underlying problems with the staff were evident to school officials.
“Two years ago, the winning hid a lot of stuff, but there was animosity from the first game to the last game,” Kaufmann said.
The Wildcats went 4-7 in Kunf’s first year as head coach and lost their opening-round playoff game.
Kaufmann said Ameral has accepted a position with Palm Beach Central’s staff. Broncos head coach Rod Harris said Ameral will coach linebackers and special teams.
