Proving once again that he is more cultural phenomenon than sports celebrity, Tim Tebow hits newsstands this week as the subject of a profile in the latest issue of GQ magazine, entitled, “Does God Have a Tim Tebow Complex?”
“When you die,” Tebow booms, “there’s gonna be a tombstone, and on that tombstone there’s gonna be a name, and there’s gonna be a date. And for me, it’s going to be 1987, and then it’s gonna have a dash…. I want that dash to mean something. I want that dash to be special. I want that dash to represent that Tim Tebow finished strong.”
Not much new material is revealed in the piece, but the picture slideshow is worth checking out (especially for you female Tebow fans out there).
Other news and notes from Tuesday’s practice….
Offensive line taking shape
Urban Meyer isn’t ready to name his complete offensive line, but said he is leaning toward giving the left tackle job to true sophomore Matt Patchan, who has put on about 45 pounds this offseason to get up to 285 pounds. That would put Carl Johnson at left guard, Maurkice Pouncey at center, Mike Pouncey at right guard and Marcus Gilbert at right tackle.
“He’s a premium athlete as far as tackles are concerned,” Meyer said of Patchan.
Johnson, who started last year at guard, said he would rather play left tackle, but said he “can’t be selfish.”
“Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes came back for a special senior year, and I want to make sure I do my part,” he said.
MLB Brandon Spikes missed the Gators’ Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday, and a team spokesman said he wasn’t feeling well and was seeing the trainer. Meyer did not have any news on Spikes, but Spikes’ Facebook page said his back was “killin” him. … Maurkice Pouncey, who has not practiced since undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason, won’t return to practice until the week of the Sept. 5 season opener, Meyer said. … Freshman receiver Andre Debose sat out of practice Tuesday with his hamstring injury. Meyer also said Debose is battling tendonitis. … OG James Wilson sat out of practice with a sprained foot. … Patchan (concussion) returned to full practice Tuesday, while Major Wright (concussion) did non-contact drills. … WR Carl Moore and CB Jeremy Brown each had a minor procedure done to correct their back injuries, and Meyer hopes to have them back soon.
Meyer said redshirt freshman OL Byran Jones is no longer with the team and will be transferring. He did not see any game action in 2008. … And red-shirt junior OL Jim Barrie, who suffered a devastating knee injury last year, will not play football again. Barrie might stick on Meyer’s staff as a student assistant.
Gettin’ hot in here
The Gators had a scorcher of a practice on Tuesday, with temperatures of 85 degrees and 82 percent humidity helping make Meyer’s rigorous practices even more challenging.
“God turned the heat up on us today. Wow, that was a tough one,” said Meyer, dripping with sweat. “The objective of our camp, you have to feel really lousy before you can feel good, and we’re at the point where everyone is feeling real lousy — which is good.”
Quote of the day
“I seen the devil out there today. He was wearing a white hat.”
– Carl Johnson, on how hot it was at practice. Wonder whom he could be talking about…
