Contract and salary for PBC School Board’s new general counsel up for vote next week

By Allison Ross

Just days after choosing attorney JulieAnn Rico to be the Palm Beach County School Board’s next general counsel, it appears the board has already tentatively reached an agreement with her on her contract.

The proposed contract, which is up for a vote at next week’s school board meeting, includes a yearly salary of $181,500.

UPDATE: Current general counsel Sheryl Wood said that salary is equivalent to her starting salary of $180,000 a year plus payment for her health insurance benefits.

This salary would put Rico as the second-highest paid employee in the school district, behind Superintendent Wayne Gent.

There have been a number of shifts at the top of the district’s organizational structure in recent months. In April, Gent named Cheryl Alligood to replace Janis Andrews as chief academic officer. Alligood is earning $175,000 a year.

That same month, Tony Rivas was tapped to replace Joseph Sanches, the district’s former chief of support operations who left to take a job in the private sector. Rivas makes $140,000 a year in his new position, a bit less than Sanches’ $157,115 salary.

Meanwhile, the district has also hired Jason Shockley at a salary of $140,000 a year to become the district’s first chief strategic marketing officer.

At Gent’s interim evaluation last week, a couple board members suggested that Gent hire a deputy superintendent so the district could be “even more effective.”

It’s unclear how far that suggestion will go, though. Other board members have expressed opposition to creating that top-level job, and Gent himself has expressed concerns with the budget.
