The shuffling of school principals and top officials around Palm Beach County schools that has gone on all year long will continue this week with the school board slated to vote on several more principal moves on Wednesday.
The board will vote on a proposal to promote Osceola Creek Middle School Principal Daniel Frank to take over as principal of Jupiter High School, one of the district’s largest schools. Frank has held his job at Osceola Creek in Loxahatchee since 2011. Frank would take over from longtime Jupiter principal Cheryl Alligood, who was promoted last month to take over as Chief Academic Officer from Janis Andrews.
The district is also proposing to transfer Leslie Bolte from principal at Lighthouse Elementary School in Jupiter to take over as principal of its sister school, Beacon Cove Intermediate School in Jupiter. Lighthouse serves students in kindergarten through second grade while Beacon Cove serves the same students for third through fifth grades. Bolte took over as principal at Lighthouse in 2010.
Una Hukill, who has been principal at Beacon Cove since it opened in in 2001 and herself was principal at Lighthouse for more than a decade, is retiring at the end of this school year, according to district officials.
The school board will also vote on a proposal to promote Palm Springs Middle School Assistant Principal Catherine Reynolds to take over as principal at Plumosa School of the Arts, an arts-themes magnet school in Delray Beach.
Plumosa is one of the more popular choice programs in the county and lately parents of Plumosa students have been complaining to the school board that they want more seats available for choice students who do not live in Plumosa’s priority neighborhoods because it has become too hard to get into Plumosa through the choice lottery.
Reynolds would replace Plumosa Principal Sally Rozanski, who was promoted from Plumosa in March to take over as principal at Bak Middle School of the Arts after that school’s longtime principal Elizabeth Kennedy abruptly retired.
Outside of principals, the school will also vote on a proposal to promote longtime instructional materials specialist William Purtell, who has overseen the process to select several new textbooks over the past few years, to take over as the new manager of instructional materials and library media support.
About the Author
Occupation: Reporter My sports/favorite activities: Sprint triathlons (swimming, biking, running), kayaking, weight training, Bikram yoga, racquetball. Goal: Eventually I’d like to get a time under one hour on sprint triathlons, but I have a ways to go to get there. Also I am trying to build up endurance to compete in the Olympic distance Luray Triathlon in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in August of 2010. (I grew up in Luray, Va.) When I'm not training: My free time lately has been spent slowly fixing up my apartment, kayaking, playing poker and traveling. I also enjoy scuba diving, sky diving, hiking and whitewater rafting. I used to surf in California and eventually want to start learning again in Florida. I'm 33, single with no children and live in Palm Springs. Biggest challenge: My biggest challenges are working at night, and the heat during the summer. I don’t get home until after midnight, which makes it hard to get out of bed and train at 6 a.m. the next morning. By 9 a.m., however, it is already so hot and humid that most outdoor training feels like I’m dying and the ocean is already getting choppy and hard to swim in, if there is any wind. What's worked for me: I did the FAU triathlon in April with a time of 1:14:31, which is not bad for a first timer but shows I still have a long way to go. I have also kayaked most of the Intracoastal in Martin and Palm Beach counties and found Martin is much nicer. Favorite reward: My favorite reward on the weekends is playing poker and drinking good beer after a long day of training. Favorite online fitness resources: I don’t really read many blogs except the Survivorman video blog. Some other good web sites are www.beginnertriathlete.com, www.hobesoundsurf.com, www.kayakjeff.com, www.bikramwpb.com (Bikram Yoga), www.multirace.com and www.skydivefl.com.
